R.I.P.

Husband came in from work last night and absentmindedly let dogs out while the pullets were out per their normal routine. Within 30 seconds, Caleb had killed my Sophie.

Husband and Caleb now in the dog house. Contemplating whether to get rid of one or the other ... or both for that matter.

I miss my Sophie.

Thanks, Viggie. Last night and today were tough, but I've got pictures of her.

Oh no, So sad! We just got two Sussex hens after reading about how much you enjoyed your flock. I'd be heartbroken if they were harmed.

I am sooooo sorry to hear that.
I vote to torture hubby very slowly because the doggie just did what he does then decide whether to get rid of them.

Trust me, Tricia. I'm working on the torture aspect. He sort of ruins it, though, because he knows how mad I am so he's been running around all afternoon trying to do things that I asked him to do a year ago. So I've just been watching him. And calling the dog "killer" every once in a while in earshot of the husband.

ARA: you go girl. My hubby would have to sleep with one eye open at all times for a very long time. While we do not have any chicken YET (I am planning on have them)this week I was planning on extreme torture for my hubby of 37 years. the last day of June he FINALLY had a physical and he got a wake up call for sure. Not only does he have high blood pressure but also high cholesterol AND high blood sugar. Needless to say I went on a healthy eating rampage and threw out all his coke, candy, desserts. We have ate no red meat or anything fried in the last 17 days AND........... TRUMPETS PLEASEEEEEE ......... I have lost 11 lbs and hubby has lost 10. YIPEEEE. We go this week to a Nutritionist to help us tweek the diet plan. I was planning on PAIN and TORTURE of hubby because this week was the first time he snapped at me about the healthy eating thing.... and I like got in his face and said TOO DARN BAD, live with because I am. LOL

May be we can both trade our hubbies in for some chickens.

Yikes! So sorry.
Just when I was getting all friendly with the idea of having the 2 together...now that's gone and rattled me all over again.

I am so sorry to hear about Sophie. To give some encouraging words, I have a friend who is able to leave her Labrador with her chicks and ducks. Maybe you can teach Caleb to not go after them? Its hard to lose any pet, and I'm sure you would miss Caleb if you got rid of him(maybe not so much the hubbie?- lol).

Janice - so sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Caleb I think is a lost cause. Dachschunds were raised to be hunters and he was just being true to his nature. The family living behind us raised rabbits and I think they got out of control with the fruitful and multiply thing. Eventually there were rabbits all over the neighborhood. Caleb got practice because every time one came in our yard we had a new present waiting at our back door. At least he doesn't maim his kills. He's a neck snapper and then just waits to be applauded for his efforts by Mickey and me. It's very hard to be mad at him.

He does well with the poultry fence, though. He can be out in the yard at the same time the big girls are as long as the fence is there. He got zapped a couple times (mind you, it's set at the lowest zap - I can handle it with my hand) and has never tried to go near the fence again. So once the pullets are big enough to not fit through the fence we should be fine.

About Me

My Photo
I'm an almost 50-year-old woman trying to create a more sustainable lifestyle for my family on our less than 1/5th acre urban homestead in south Florida. You're welcome to follow our journey as we attempt to grow as much of our own organic produce as our little yard can take, raise backyard chickens for eggs, compost, and amusement, try to reduce our carbon footprint, learn to preserve food by canning, freezing, and dehydrating, and hopefully turn our little urban homestead into a profitable venture.

About This Blog

My Edible Yard was created in an effort to spur myself on while publicly journaling my trials, errors, and successes in the creation of our urban homestead. The key word here is publicly as I am famous for zealously starting projects and then abandoning them. In making my south Florida urban homesteading experience public, I hope to force myself to continue on with the project and actually create a more sustainable life for my husband and me. So please send kind words of encouragement, gardening and cooking tips to keep me going. They are all much appreciated.
