Thoughts About The Urban Homestead

I've been thinking. I've been thinking about things that need to get done around here and how it's near impossible for us to get it all done. I want very much for us to be more self-sufficient, but how do we accomplish it all when we both work full-time? I have a more than full-time medical transcription business that is growing and needs more and more attention. Mickey works full-time at Publix, graciously supplying us with much-needed health insurance, and it's an extremely physical job, so he's already bone tired when he gets home at night. I feel bad asking him to help me do the physical labor in the garden that I can't do. He deserves to be able to rest on his days off.

So I've been thinking it's time to hire someone to help. But I can't decide if it should be someone to help us with the gardening or someone to help me with the transcription business. Is it possible to find someone who can do both? What would I put in the job description? General office duties, accurate data entry, filing, answering phones, feeding chickens, building raised beds, hauling compost, weeding, fence building, light carpentry. I wonder how many people would respond to that?

I have checked into learning medical transcription but did not know if that was a way go to make extra money from home. I would be willing to learn but it would have to be through the computer. I have been a bookkeeper and office manager for my husband's construction company for 25 years.
I am available every evening and weekends to do any work. I am certified at MS Office & Excel, I also know QuickBooks and other accounting software.

If you think you could use me, just let me know. Email is CmoreROOTS@aol.com

Nice blog with plenty of great information! I found you at home and garden sites. I have a very small CA garden in the mountains and pursuing organic gardening too. I grow flowers, herbs, and veggies. Please stop by when you have a chance! Have a wonderful day :)

You might be surprised these days. There are lots of people who would be delighted to have work.

Tricia - it's not the transcription I need help with - it's the actual office duties, which would need to be done from here. Transcription is a great green job though because it can be done from home. All my transcriptionists work from their homes over the internet.

Priscilla - I'm getting ready to stop by your blog today. Thanks for finding mine.

Susan - You're right. Tons of people are looking for jobs. It's just a matter of finding the right person that I feel comfortable having in the house and trust with the animals and the garden.

Maybe you can tell me how to go about getting started in the Medical transcription work. What training I need AND how to get work. I would really love to get started doing something like this from home because my hubby will reach retirement age before me by 4years. We want to move on up to our North Florida house so this would be a great way to do that instead of staying in South Florida where it is way too HOT way toooo expensive to live.

HELP I want OUT OF HERE lol

Tricia - find a good transcription program either at a community college or an online school. There are quite a few approved by AHDI, the national transcription organization. Finding a job out of school is probably hard these days, but some transcription companies do hire newbies and often hospitals do.

About Me

My Photo
I'm an almost 50-year-old woman trying to create a more sustainable lifestyle for my family on our less than 1/5th acre urban homestead in south Florida. You're welcome to follow our journey as we attempt to grow as much of our own organic produce as our little yard can take, raise backyard chickens for eggs, compost, and amusement, try to reduce our carbon footprint, learn to preserve food by canning, freezing, and dehydrating, and hopefully turn our little urban homestead into a profitable venture.

About This Blog

My Edible Yard was created in an effort to spur myself on while publicly journaling my trials, errors, and successes in the creation of our urban homestead. The key word here is publicly as I am famous for zealously starting projects and then abandoning them. In making my south Florida urban homesteading experience public, I hope to force myself to continue on with the project and actually create a more sustainable life for my husband and me. So please send kind words of encouragement, gardening and cooking tips to keep me going. They are all much appreciated.
