First Homestead Purchase

Our first future homestead purchase. We weren't planning it and I still don't know what made me look, but I came across this stove on eBay and fell in love with it. It seemed to call out to me as the appropriate first purchase for our someday homestead, something that, to me, says home.

1953 O'Keefe & Merritt stove
It's a 1953 O'Keefe & Merritt with 6 burners, 2 ovens, and 2 broilers and, while it still works, needs restoration. We're sending it to a company called Dream Stoves in California that specializes in restoring antique stoves.

It should end up looking something like this:

Fully restored O'Keefe & Merritt stove

Oh my gawd How AWESOME will that stove be when it is restored to all it's glory. I want one NOW.
I do not even want to know FIRST what you paid for it in the un-restored condition and how much it will cost to restroe it. YES I DO...... tell all of us. Would I have to.....
Sell my kids? This I would consider. Sell drugs? no way, not even for the stove. Sell my body? like anyone would buy it. I have been married over 37 years and my hubby has cataracts LOL.

Spill the info, girlfriend.

Tricia - I have seen them listed on eBay and Craigs List for under $500 (I saw one the other day for $238), but you can certainly get one for under $1000 in unrestored condition. To get it restored, it depends if you need parts or if you need the porcelain done. I don't have the full price yet because the restorer hasn't yet received it to let me know. I should know more this week.

I can tell you that this is the way to do it. If you buy one from someone who has already restored one, they charge at least 35% more than if you just pay them to restore one.

Is it gas? oh my word....sorry I think I just swooned. Beautiful even the way it is!

How awesomely gorgeous that will look in your homestead! WE still

Yes, Crystal, it's gas. We are going to have it switched to propane so that we don't have to have gas lines run.

You've done it now! I'm sending my husband over here to see your post. I can't believe that awesome stove. I love it!

that is a beautiful stove!! how wonderfully exciting! do you have the option of using wood for it too or will it be only for propane? maybe that's a dumb question but i would want one that could do both, if that's possible. what's the first thing your going to make on it?! :)

My Edible Yard August 10, 2010 at 2:57 PM

Stacey - To my understanding, I only have the option of gas and propane - I may be able to have it work with both of those - but I don't believe I have the wood option, as much as I would like it.

I had this exact same stove at my home in northern California and just loved it. The only difference is that mine had a salt and pepper shaker set that fit into the top of the control panel. Whenever you finally get to set it up, you'll just love it. Good purchase!

About Me

My Photo
I'm an almost 50-year-old woman trying to create a more sustainable lifestyle for my family on our less than 1/5th acre urban homestead in south Florida. You're welcome to follow our journey as we attempt to grow as much of our own organic produce as our little yard can take, raise backyard chickens for eggs, compost, and amusement, try to reduce our carbon footprint, learn to preserve food by canning, freezing, and dehydrating, and hopefully turn our little urban homestead into a profitable venture.

About This Blog

My Edible Yard was created in an effort to spur myself on while publicly journaling my trials, errors, and successes in the creation of our urban homestead. The key word here is publicly as I am famous for zealously starting projects and then abandoning them. In making my south Florida urban homesteading experience public, I hope to force myself to continue on with the project and actually create a more sustainable life for my husband and me. So please send kind words of encouragement, gardening and cooking tips to keep me going. They are all much appreciated.
